Gestures Beneath

(2022)

Muslims pray by making a series of gestures that correspond to specific recitations, with a pause in between. When I pray in my praying gown known as telekung, which is not required but is very symbolic of my culture as a Muslim woman from the Malay archipelago, these gestures are not visible.

As the subject of the moving images, I extend the observance of the gestures towards exploring the idea of disconnection from the world when one is praying. How much control do I have when I am being watched while I am supposed to be disengaged from other creations for a moment?

Gestures Beneath, was exhibited during group exhibition in Gallery West, University of Westminster, London, 2022
